Football season is in full swing, and on those chilly Sunday nights I’m usually craving just one thing- something warm, comforting, and FAST. I’m talking on the table in 20 minutes. How about Sloppy Joes as a blast from your childhood? This is the best version I’ve had- packed with so much flavor and tenderness; I could not believe how easy they were to throw together.
This recipe yields enough for 4 full servings, but it can easily be doubled if you’re throwing a party or want to snack on leftovers throughout the week. Luckily my husband was the only one who ate these with me. If there’s one thing that’s true about classic sloppy joes, it’s that they are meant to be piled high and spilling over. There is no way to look good while biting into these tangy-sweet sandwiches. But, nevertheless, they are an American classic and meant to be messily enjoyed.
Now grab some chips and have at it!
In a large skillet over medium high heat, brown the meat (I use 90% lean), onions, and green peppers. Season lightly with fresh ground pepper while cooking. Drain out any excess liquid and return to the skillet.
Stir in the ketchup, barbecue sauce, mustard, brown sugar, chili powder, and vinegar. You’ll want a 3/4 cup mixture of ketchup and your favorite barbecue sauce. Split in half, that’s 6 tablespoons each. You could change up the amount of either, as long as it totals to 3/4 of a cup. Reduce the heat to let simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste to adjust any seasonings as desired.
Give everything a nice stir and divide between 4 toasted buns.
